Endoscopy Capabilities
New At Warrenville Grove Animal Hospital

Patients with vomiting as a major symptom may have a simple problem such as having eaten something that is difficult to digest or a more complex problem such as pancreatitis or liver disease. To determine the cause of vomiting, the veterinarian begins with questioning the pet owner about diet, exposure to toxins, and other pertinent concerns. Then an exam is performed, along with any neccesary bloodwork and x-rays. Typically, these tests provide enough clues to make a diagnosis and begin treatment. But what if no answers are found and the animal continues to vomit?
Warrenville Grove Animal Hospital has recently added endoscopy services for these patients. Endoscopy goes where other tests cannot!
          This is how endoscopy works:
Patients are anesthetized and a small flexible fiberoptic scope is passed through the esophagus into the stomach and beginning portion of the small intestine. The scope allows the veterinarian to see what the inside of the stomach and intestines look like. Foreign objects may be seen and biopsy samples may be taken. The biopsies can reveal whether there is infection, inflammation, or even cancer cells present.
Endoscopy may also be useful in diagnosing the cause of diarrhea or chronic weight loss.
Endoscopy procedures are not considered invasive and do not involve great risk. We are pleased to offer this new service to our patients should they require it.
